Plan your visit

Birds your kids will actually see through the glass

The big draw is the heated observation room, so you can watch wildlife in comfort whatever the weather. Out over the brackish lagoon you'll spot common terns, black-tailed godwits, lapwings, redshanks and oystercatchers, with large flocks of waders and wildfowl building up through autumn and winter. Look for wigeon, teal and curlew on the water, and Konik ponies grazing the surrounding meadows. RSPB volunteers are usually on hand to point things out and help newcomers, so you don't need to know a thing about birds before you go. Binoculars are handy, but the windows and scopes do plenty of the work.

The story

About the place

Belfast's Window on Wildlife, often shortened to WOW, is an RSPB nature reserve on the edge of Belfast Harbour, sitting right beside the city and its docks. The heart of it is a man-made brackish lagoon and the observation room that looks out over it, giving close views of birds that would normally keep their distance.

The wider reserve covers several connected areas including Harbour Meadows, Holywood Banks and Whitehouse Lagoon, with mudflats that are an important stop for migrating birds along Belfast Lough. It's a rare patch of wildlife-rich habitat tucked among the industrial harbour, and the RSPB manages it for the terns, waders and wildfowl that depend on it.
