Plan your visit

Three rivers and an old railway line

The route covers about 24km in total (14.8 miles) and is mapped as traffic-free. The surface is roughly 87% sealed asphalt and 12% gravel or loose path, so you are on smooth tarmac for most of it. In Omagh you follow a path beside the Camowen River; through Strabane a traffic-free stretch runs along the Great Northern Link beside the Mourne; and the Derry end meanders along the River Foyle to the quay. Because parts of it sit on the old Derry Road railway bed, those sections are flat and steady. Just know the towns are linked by short on-street bits, so it is sections rather than one long ride.

The story

About this trail

Route 92 follows much of the old Great Northern Railway corridor, known locally as the Derry Road line, which once carried trains between Derry, Strabane and Omagh before closure left the embankments and trackbed behind. Reusing those flat rail beds is what gives parts of the route its easy gradient today.

The Strabane section was given a major upgrade in 2021, when a £1.3m greenway opened running from the Derry Road and Canal Basin along the River Mourne flood wall to Strabane Retail Park, connecting on towards Lifford. There are longer-term plans for a continuous Derry-to-Omagh greenway along the full old line, but for now Route 92 is best enjoyed as a set of riverside sections.
