The civil rights and Bloody Sunday story, told first-hand
The exhibition runs through government oppression, the campaign for civil rights, the descent into conflict, Free Derry and Bloody Sunday. What sets it apart is the use of personal narratives and eyewitness accounts, alongside original artefacts and photographs from the period. You stand on the ground where it happened, a few steps from the Bogside murals and the Bloody Sunday memorial. Eyewitness lunchtime talks let you hear directly from people who lived through those years.

The Museum of Free Derry is owned and run by the Bloody Sunday Trust. It tells the story of the Free Derry era, the civil rights movement and the events of Bloody Sunday on 30 January 1972, when 13 civil rights marchers were shot dead by British soldiers in the Bogside and another died later of his wounds.
Built in the neighbourhood where those events unfolded, the museum gathers original artefacts, photographs and the personal testimony of people directly affected. It frames the period from the community's perspective rather than an official one, which is why it has become one of Derry's most significant visitor sites and a regular stop on tours of the Bogside murals and Free Derry Corner.
