What you can paddle on the Tyrone shore

This is a paddle-it-yourself trail, not a place you book a lesson. You can explore quieter bays, inlets and the shoreline near Coney Island, Maghery, Ardboe and Ballyronan, or head out onto the open lough if you are experienced. Wildlife watching and passing historical sites are part of the draw. On calm days the sheltered sections suit first-time paddlers, but the open water can build ocean-like waves in wind and is for competent paddlers only. You will need your own canoe, kayak or board and a buoyancy aid, plus basic swimming ability.

The story

About the trail

Lough Neagh is the UK's largest inland lake, with a shoreline of over 90 miles, and the Lough Neagh Canoe Trail runs right around it. Paddlers can explore the many bays and inlets or the vast open water while watching wildlife and passing historical sites.

The trail is self-guided and can be started at any access point. canoeNI notes that in windy weather the lough can create ocean-like conditions with few islands or bays for shelter, so the expertise needed depends almost entirely on the weather - calm days are fine for a first trip, rough days are for experts only. Ballyronan Marina, the main launch on the Tyrone/western shore, is an award-winning marina with Blue Flag beach status.
