A simple stop, not a trail

Be clear on what this is before you build a day around it. Killymaddy is a roadside amenity site on the old Ballygawley Road (the B34, the former A4 line), with a lay-by, picnic tables, space to walk the dog and information panels covering the local area. There is no waymarked walk, no playground and no adventure attraction here. The main visitor centre services - the information desk, cafe and shop - moved to Ranfurly House in Dungannon after the site was bypassed by the new dual carriageway, so do not arrive expecting refreshments or staffed facilities on site. It works best as a quick leg-stretch or picnic break, taking 15 to 30 minutes.

Killymaddy itself is a roadside stop and does not run its own events. The area's tourist information, guided sessions and seasonal family activities are now run from Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre in Dungannon - check listings for what is on around Mid Ulster.

The story

About this place

Killymaddy sits on the Ballygawley Road west of Dungannon, on what was the main A4 until 2010. For years it operated as the main tourist amenity and information centre for the town and surrounding area, with an information desk, cafe, souvenir shop, bureau de change and an accommodation and caravan-hire booking service for passing visitors.

When the new A4 Dungannon to Ballygawley dual carriageway opened in November 2010 it bypassed this stretch - the old road was downgraded to the B34 - and the visitor information functions were relocated into Dungannon itself, to the Hill of the O'Neill and Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre. What remains at Killymaddy is the roadside amenity - the lay-by, picnic tables, dog-walking space, information panels and an overflow caravan stopover - which is why it is best thought of today as an unstaffed driving break rather than a staffed attraction. As an unstaffed bypassed site, check before you go if you are relying on it.
