Game of ThronesThe Hollow Hill

A dark, dramatic cave mouth in the woods of Belmore Forest, with a waterfall spilling down the limestone cliff beside it — and the on-screen entrance to the Brotherhood's Hollow Hill hideout in Game of Thrones. One of Fermanagh's great wild finds, and free.

  • What you'll do — follow the waymarked woodland trail through Belmore Forest to a viewing platform above the cave, where the yawning cave entrance and its cascading waterfall come into view; take in the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark forest scenery on the way, and picture the Season 3 Game of Thrones scenes filmed here.
  • How long — the full waymarked loop is about 3.7 miles on forest tracks; allow roughly two to two and a half hours for the walk and time at the cave viewpoint.
  • Pricefree. No booking, no ticket; car parking at the forest entrance with an information panel.
  • What to bring — proper walking boots with grip; the ground is wet, muddy and uneven, and a waterproof and layers are wise this deep in cave country. Bring water — there are no facilities on site.
  • Wet, slippery, uneven ground — take real care. This is a rough forest walk to a cliff-edge viewpoint; wear sturdy boots, keep children close, and view from the platform only — don't climb into the cave or the water.
  • Remote forest, no facilities. There are no toilets, no café and patchy phone signal; go before you leave the nearest village, check the route in advance, and don't rely on a signal out here.
  • Dogs — welcome on the forest trails, kept under control; there's livestock and wildlife about, so a lead is sensible near the open ground.

Can I just turn up? Yes — it's free, but come prepared

There's no ticket and no booking — Pollnagollum Cave sits at the end of a waymarked walk through Belmore Forest, managed by NI Forest Service, and you're free to park at the entrance and set off. The trick is coming ready for it: the walk is about 3.7 miles on forest tracks, graded moderate, with surfaces that can be slippery and uneven and a few short, steep climbs. There's an information panel and parking at the entrance, but no toilets or café on site — the nearest amenities are at Boho, so plan ahead. Wear proper boots, take water, and keep back from the cliff edge at the viewpoint.

Stay on the platform:

The cave entrance is reached by a viewing platform above a steep drop, and the ground around it is wet and slippery. Enjoy the view from the platform — don't scramble down into the cave mouth or the water, and keep children and dogs close.

The story

The Hole of the Doves — and the Hollow Hill

The name comes from the Irish for "hole of the doves", and for centuries this cliff-backed hollow was simply a wild corner of Belmore Mountain, where a stream drops off the limestone and vanishes into the dark of the cave. Fermanagh is cave country — riddled with sink-holes, underground rivers and the great show cave at Marble Arch not far off — and Pollnagollum is one of its most striking open faces, a place walkers have long climbed up through the forest to see.

Then, in 2012, the film crews arrived. The exterior of the cave was used in Game of Thrones as the entrance to the Hollow Hill, the underground hideout of the Brotherhood Without Banners, where Arya Stark and the Hound are held captive in Season 3. Thousands have since walked the forest trail to stand where the cameras stood — but the cave was doing its dramatic thing long before television found it, and it will carry on long after.
