What it was before the fire

Formula Karting was an indoor, drive-it-yourself karting centre — you got behind the wheel rather than watching from the stands. It ran arrive-and-drive sessions plus booked Grand Prix and Mini Prix races for groups, with junior race sessions for younger drivers available on request. On site there was a viewing lounge, an arcade, simulators and a café bar, with car, bus and coach parking. Minimum ages applied, as they do at any karting track. None of this is bookable at present because the venue is closed.

The story

About the venue

Formula Karting operated for more than 30 years at Greenbank Industrial Estate in Newry, one of the area's long-established family-run businesses and one of Northern Ireland's better-known indoor karting venues.

On 13 July 2024 an accidental fire gutted the building and the neighbouring House of Murphy premises. The site was demolished, and in 2025 the owners submitted planning applications to rebuild. Whether the karting centre returns in its previous form has not been confirmed.
