The story

A farm with a big heart in the Fermanagh hills

Fermanagh Fun Farm sits in the green countryside just outside Lisbellaw, a short run from Enniskillen, and it's a little different from the usual open farm. It's a not-for-profit social enterprise, run with volunteers and staff, and home to more than 150 rescued and adopted animals — goats, ponies, donkeys, alpacas, cattle, poultry and a whole cast of smaller friends, each given a home for life and cared for as a pet.

For families, that heart shows in the day itself. The one ticket gets the children right in among the animals — a basket of feed to hand out, a pony to walk and groom, and a pet-handling session where the small, friendly animals come out for a cuddle. Around it, a big indoor play barn with a soft-play frame, slides and a shed of ride-on pedal tractors keeps everyone going whatever the weather, and an outdoor playground and picnic area open up when the sun's out.

The farm also does quieter, kinder work behind the scenes — offering adults with disabilities real, hands-on training in animal care, hospitality and gardening, working towards proper qualifications. So a family day here does a little more than fill an afternoon: your ticket helps keep the rescued animals fed and the community work going. It's said to be the only proper open farm in Fermanagh, and it's an easygoing, warm-hearted one to spend a day at.
