The five Derry Girls — plus James, the English one — painted two storeys high on the side of Badgers Bar — the most-photographed wall in the city. Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and James, right there in glorious colour, and it's free to visit any time.

  • What you'll do — find the big Derry Girls mural on the gable of Badgers Bar on Orchard Street, line up your selfie with the whole gang, and soak up the fact you're standing in the actual city the show is set in.
  • Make a day of it — it's a two-minute walk from the city walls and the Bogside murals, and close to the Craft Village and Guildhall — pair it with a Derry Girls walking tour to see the show's real filming spots.
  • How long & how much — it's a quick photo stop (five or ten minutes), and it's completely free — you just walk up to the wall.
  • Getting there & parking — it's bang in the city centre opposite Foyleside; use the city-centre car parks (Foyleside is right across the way) and it's a short walk.
  • Cafés & a pint nearby — Badgers Bar itself does food, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants a few steps away in the centre.
  • It's on a busy city-centre street. The mural is on a pub gable right by a road — grab your photo and mind the traffic, especially with little ones in tow.
  • Don't make it the whole trip. It's a five-minute stop on its own — pair it with the city walls and the Bogside just up the hill to turn it into a proper Derry day out.
Plan your visit

Can I just turn up and take a photo? Yes — it's free and always there.

The mural is painted on the outside gable of Badgers Bar and Restaurant on Orchard Street, in the middle of the city, opposite the Foyleside shopping centre. There's no ticket, no gate and no opening hours — it's a public wall you can walk up to and photograph whenever you like, day or night. Use the city-centre car parks, and it's a short walk in. Because it's a big flat wall, you'll want to step back across the street to fit the whole thing in your shot — so keep an eye on the road while you're framing it. Fancy more? A Derry Girls walking tour takes you round the show's real filming locations, and the city walls and Bogside murals are a couple of minutes away.

Good to know:

It's a busy city-centre spot beside a road, so mind the traffic while you line up your photo. There can be a bit of a queue for the best angle on a sunny weekend — everyone wants the same shot. A short section of the mural sits behind the bar's outdoor seating, so you may need to step back to catch all five faces.

Before you set off

The story

The wall that put a comedy on the map

Derry Girls is the Channel 4 comedy written by Derry's own Lisa McGee, set in the city in the 1990s and following five teenagers — Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and Michelle's cousin James, the "wee English fella" — through Catholic school, family chaos and the tail end of the Troubles. The first series aired in 2018 and it quickly became one of the most-loved comedies to come out of Northern Ireland, going on to win BAFTAs and land on Netflix around the world.

The mural was painted by UV Arts, a Derry not-for-profit, and unveiled in 2019 on the gable of Badgers Bar on Orchard Street. It shows the whole gang two storeys high in their green Our Lady Immaculate uniforms — Michelle throwing the peace sign, Orla mid-daydream, Clare wide-eyed as ever. It's become one of the first things fans want to see when they come to the city, and a fixture on the Derry Girls tours that take visitors round the real filming spots. A wall, a bar and a comedy — and one of the most-photographed corners of Derry.
