The walk: flat bog, then the famous climb

From the trailhead car park it's about 4.5km of mostly flat gravel track out across the blanket bog before the boardwalk begins. The boardwalk section is around 1.5km and ends with the 450-step wooden staircase that gives the walk its 'Stairway to Heaven' nickname. The steps are steep and there's no shortcut — you climb them to reach the viewing platform, then come back down the same way, so it's an out-and-back of roughly 11km in total. Allow 2-3 hours, or up to 4-5 if you're going at a gentle family pace with stops. Note the platform is the end point, not the actual summit of Cuilcagh; access beyond it is restricted to protect the rare bog habitat.

The story

About this place

Cuilcagh Mountain straddles the border between Fermanagh and Cavan and sits within the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark. The walk crosses one of the largest expanses of blanket bog in Northern Ireland, a European-designated Special Area of Conservation, where peat has built up over thousands of years.

The boardwalk was laid to protect that fragile peat from the boots of growing visitor numbers, and the timber walkway and steep flight of steps quickly turned the route into one of the country's most photographed walks — the 'Stairway to Heaven' name comes from the way the staircase appears to climb straight up into the sky.

The platform at the top of the steps is the official end of the trail, giving views over the Fermanagh lakelands and lowlands, with access beyond it restricted to keep the rare bog habitat intact.
