A long, golden strand on the Causeway Coast at Castlerock village — a Blue Flag beach with free parking on the promenade, summer lifeguards, and the Downhill cliffs and Mussenden Temple right next door. Free, open all year.
What you'll do — walk the wide open sand, paddle when it's warm, build sandcastles, fly a kite, or take the boardwalks over the dunes. Surfers and bodyboarders love the rollers here, and it's a short hop to Mussenden Temple and the Downhill cliffs.
How long & who for — allow two to four hours for a proper beach day, easily longer when the sun's out. Great for all ages — buckets-and-spades weather.
Cost & parking — free. There's free car parking on the promenade, and cars can drive onto the eastern end of the beach year-round (soft sand can make it tricky, so take care).
Food & toilets — accessible toilets are on the promenade, and Castlerock village sits right behind the beach with a shop and places to grab a bite. Bring a picnic and plenty of water for the sand.
Bring the lot — buckets, spades, towels and swim gear in summer, plus a coat for the sea breeze and a hat and water for a sunny day.
Lifeguards in July and August only. RNLI lifeguards patrol daily 10am–6pm in July and August. Outside those months there's no cover, so mind the tide and the currents — the Barmouth river mouth at the eastern end has strong flows, so keep well clear of it when swimming.
Watch for cars on the sand. Vehicles are allowed on the eastern part of the beach all year, so keep an eye on little ones near the driving area.

Getting there
Castlerock Beach is in Castlerock village on the Causeway Coast in County Londonderry, between the Downhill cliffs and the Barmouth. There's free parking on the promenade, and Castlerock railway station is right in the village on the Belfast–Derry~Londonderry line, so you can come by train too.
Castlerock grew up as a Victorian seaside resort once the railway reached it in the 1850s, and the train is still part of the fun — the little station sits right in the village on the Belfast to Derry~Londonderry line, dropping you a short walk from the sand. The beach runs roughly a kilometre between the dark basalt cliffs of Downhill to the west and the Barmouth, where the River Bann meets the sea, to the east.
It's a beach that earns its keep: a Blue Flag most years, backed by a championship links golf course, with the dunes and the promenade behind. Look west and you'll see Mussenden Temple perched on the cliff edge at Downhill — one of the most photographed spots in Ireland — and across the water, the hills of Donegal. Come for the sand, and there's a whole coast to explore next door.
