A climb, a swing, then off to run

The playground gives younger kids the usual favourites plus structures to clamber on and slide down. It is the kind of spot where toddlers and bigger kids can both find something, so siblings of different ages are sorted. Once they have had their fill of the equipment, the park does the rest of the work. The open grass and winding paths are made for chasing about, hide-and-seek and letting off steam.

The story

About the park

Belmont Park is an urban green space in the leafy Belmont area of East Belfast, off the Holywood Road. It is kept deliberately semi-wild, with grassland, wildflower meadows and copses of bluebells rather than formal flower beds, and it has earned the Green Flag Award most years since 2012 as one of the better-managed open spaces in the UK.

The park is managed by Belfast City Council and links to more green space by a footbridge over the ring road. Carved wooden figures, part of the council's Art in the Park programme, sit among the trees, and an allotment site borders the park. It remains a well-used neighbourhood green lung for families across East Belfast.
