Climbing you don't need your own kit for

Because sessions are run by accredited instructors, this suits complete beginners as much as anyone who's climbed before. The on-site formats are the mobile climbing wall, a low-level bouldering wall, a cave wall climb and an abseil with a climb-out through the cave system. The minimum age is 8 and the weight limit is around 18 stone, including a wheelchair where relevant, and the facilities are wheelchair accessible. The usual 10-metre wooden tower is closed for major works until December 2026, so the other formats carry the session in the meantime. For groups wanting real rock, the centre also runs guided natural climbing in the Mournes and other crags.

Good to know before you go:

Climbing centres and activity providers run taster sessions, junior clubs, courses and birthday parties through the year, and Belfast Activity Centre also offers school programmes, corporate team days and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Check their own pages for current session dates and prices, and confirm the tower's reopening status before booking around it.

About the venue

Belfast Activity Centre is a registered charitable company (NI Charity Commission NIC101347) running outdoor education and adventure activities from Barnett's Stable Yard in Barnett's Demesne, with a second base at Ardaluin House near Newcastle. Its instructors are SPA or Climbing Wall Leader accredited and the centre is known locally for its artificial cave, which it describes as the largest in Ireland.
