A long sandy town beach with a proper promenade, right on the Antrim coast — and a grand view across to Rathlin Island and Fair Head as you walk. Free, family-friendly, and only minutes from the town's cafés and the harbour.

  • What you'll do — stroll the beach and the promenade, paddle in the shallows on a warm day, build sandcastles, take in the views out to Rathlin and Fair Head, and wander round to the harbour — where the Rathlin Island ferry leaves if you fancy making a day of it.
  • How long & who for — allow two to three hours for the beach and a stroll, easily a full day if you add a Rathlin trip. Great for all ages — an easy, level walk with the town right alongside.
  • Cost & parkingfree to visit. There's car parking near the seafront and marina and more in the town, a short walk away — it can get busy on sunny days and in summer.
  • Food & toilets — the town's cafés, chip shops and pubs are minutes away, plus a visitor information centre and toilets near the seafront. Easy to grab lunch and come back for more.
  • Swim between the flags — lifeguards summer only. RNLI lifeguards patrol in July and August (roughly 10am–6pm); outside those months there's no cover, so take care with paddling and mind the tide.
  • Seasonal dog rules. Dog restrictions apply on the beach from 1 June to 15 September — check the signs on the day, and keep it on a lead where asked.
Plan your visit

Can I just turn up? Yes — it's free.

The beach is open and free any day of the year — no booking, no ticket. It's a sandy town beach, about 1.2km long, running from the pier at Ballycastle Marina at the western end round towards Pans Rock in the east, with a promenade at the marina end and a short boardwalk through the dunes to a viewing platform. It's minutes from the town centre on foot, with a footbridge over the River Margy linking the seafront to the town. There's car parking near the seafront and in the town, so you can park up, walk the sand, then wander in for a bite. Ballycastle Beach regularly earns a Seaside Award, and the marina alongside holds a Blue Flag.

The story

The town beach at the top of Antrim

Ballycastle has always looked out to sea. The beach and promenade sit right on the town's doorstep, with the harbour alongside and the boats coming and going — including the ferry to Rathlin Island, six miles offshore and the only inhabited island off the Northern Ireland coast. Across the water to the east stands Fair Head, a great dark wall of cliff that marks the corner where the north coast turns south.

The seafront is also where the town gathers. Down by the harbour you'll find the Marconi and Marine memorials — a nod to the first over-water radio signals sent from near here in 1898, when Marconi's team linked Ballycastle to Rathlin. And every August the town fills for the Ould Lammas Fair, one of Ireland's oldest fairs, famous for its dulse and yellowman. Come for the beach, stay for the ferry and the town — it's an easy, happy day at the top of Antrim.
