This is a wild shore dive on the Strangford Lough shore, not an easy beach swim. It suits qualified, experienced divers who are confident with cold water and tidal conditions; it is not a beginner site and not a guided trip. If you are new to diving, go with a local club or a guided operator instead of attempting a tidal shore site yourself. Strangford Lough is rich underwater, and on a settled slack you may see kelp, beds of brittle stars, conger eels and dense invertebrate life, though nothing is ever guaranteed. Plan conservatively and keep the dive well within your training and your buddy team's experience.

The story

About it

Audley's Castle is a 15th-century tower house standing on a rocky height about a mile north-east of Strangford village, overlooking the lough, within the grounds of the Castle Ward estate.

Strangford Lough is one of the most tidal stretches of water in Ireland, with swift streams through the Narrows and slack windows reported to last only around 15 minutes — which is why local guidance for the lough's dives consistently stresses diving at slack water and timing every dive to the tide.
