About Armagh County Museum
The museum opened on 28 April 1937 as the first county museum in Ireland. The building began life in 1835 as Charlemont Place National School, and from 1856 housed the collections of the Armagh Natural History and Philosophical Society, which formed the basis of today's museum.
T.G.F. Paterson became the first full-time curator in 1935 and built the collection across archaeology, art and local history. The galleries behind the neoclassical facade were rebuilt between 1959 and 1962. The museum is now part of National Museums NI.
