Wildlife on the bog you can actually find

The walks here are the main event and they are genuinely good for spotting wildlife. The boardwalk crosses a small raised-bog reserve where carnivorous sundew plants grow, sphagnum moss spreads underfoot and bog plants like cranberry and bilberry thrive. Look out for large heath butterflies, common lizards, Irish hares and smooth newts, with ground-nesting birds such as snipe on the peatland and red grouse and hen harriers recorded across the wider South Sperrins. There is always something for sharp-eyed kids to find. The flat boardwalk sections mean even little legs and buggies can join in.

The story

About the place

An Creagán is run as a social enterprise that promotes the history, culture and natural beauty of the Sperrins, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The centre grew up around the conservation and restoration of the surrounding blanket bog, one of the area's most important habitats, with boardwalks letting visitors explore the peatland without damaging it.

Inside, interpretive panels tell the story of the Sperrins' rich archaeology, from standing stones and passage tombs to the area's early Christian history and local folklore. The famous Beaghmore stone circles lie nearby, making the centre a natural starting point for exploring ancient Tyrone.

Alongside the trails and exhibition, An Creagán offers self-catering cottages, a café using local produce, and a craft shop selling local books and Sperrins-themed souvenirs.
